Reaching goals

If you want to enjoy something fantastic, you have to make an effort first. Usually, it does not take long until you set yourself in motion if the goal seems appealing enough. When the journey begins, and the excitement quickly grows. However, impatience gradually spreads.

Yet, once you have reached your goal, all the effort gets instantly forgotten. Finally, you can enjoy what you have been working towards for so long – often, the reality exceeds expectations.

However, this experience can only be so exceptional because it ends at some point. This is why at some point, you slowly make your way back. Then you indulge in memories until something new and fantastic opens up – just like with personal goals.

Autumn in the German Harz Mountains: Following the Light

Autumn in the German Harz Mountains

There are days in autumn when the light seems to change everything.

I photographed this view while walking in the hills around Blankenburg, looking out across the forests of the Harz. The landscape stretched into the distance in layers of green, rust, gold and brown, while the sun found its way through the branches above me.

It was one of those views that made me stop.

Not because there was one spectacular landmark in front of me, but because everything came together for a moment: the autumn colours, the open landscape and the sunlight breaking through the trees.

This is one of the things I love about autumn in the German Harz Mountains. You can walk through dense forest and suddenly find yourself somewhere completely open, looking across miles of changing landscape.

A View Framed by Autumn

What first caught my attention here was actually the tree above me.

Its branches naturally framed the landscape, with the sunlight appearing through a small opening between the remaining leaves. Instead of photographing only the distant view, I wanted those branches to stay in the image.

They give the photograph a sense of standing there rather than simply looking at a landscape from afar.

Below, the forest seems to continue almost endlessly. Some trees are still holding onto their green, while others have already moved into the deeper yellows and browns of late autumn.

That's what makes photographing the Harz Mountains in autumn so interesting to me. The landscape doesn't change all at once. Different colours and stages of the season exist beside each other.

Walking Around Blankenburg in Autumn

Blankenburg is surrounded by the kind of landscape that makes me want to keep walking just to see what's around the next corner.

There are forests, hills, rocky viewpoints and paths where the view can change completely within a short distance. In autumn, that becomes even more noticeable.

I don't necessarily go out looking for the perfect view. Usually, I just walk with my camera and see what catches my attention.

Sometimes it's a wide landscape like this one. Other times it's sunlight hitting a few leaves, a path disappearing between trees, or the colours on the forest floor.

For me, autumn photography in the Harz Mountains is as much about those small discoveries as the larger views.

Why I Keep Photographing Autumn

Autumn has a built-in sense of urgency.

You know the colours won't last.

A forest that is glowing gold one week can be almost bare the next. The light changes quickly, leaves disappear, and suddenly the landscape you photographed is gone for another year.

Perhaps that's why I notice more during this season.

Photography lets me keep a little of what would otherwise disappear: not only what a place looked like, but the atmosphere of standing there when the light was just right.

This photograph from Blankenburg is one of those moments for me.

A walk through the forest, an unexpected opening in the trees, and autumn in the German Harz Mountains stretching out in front of me.

Bringing the Feeling of Autumn Home

This particular photograph isn't available as a fine art print, but it reflects much of what I look for when creating my autumn photography: warm natural colours, beautiful light and places that make you want to stay for a little longer.

My Autumn Fine Art Print Collection brings together photographs from different landscapes and cities, all connected by that same feeling of the season.

If you love golden forests, warm light and the quieter atmosphere of autumn, you can explore the collection and find the piece that feels right for your space.
