A journey through time (Autumn in the Harz Mountains)
A journey through time
Time helps when looking back because the usual focus does not know any shifts while being involved in something. When you recall the hazy memories after a while, you quickly embark on a journey through time. Things may still feel familiar when you think of them, yet, the time has not passed you by without leaving a trace.
Yet, if you stare at something for too long, you often can’t see the forest for the trees. Hence, at a distance, the tunnel vision disappears. Therefore, many lose meaning if you look at the same things again. Sometimes, it takes a long time to understand that the actions of others are rarely your responsibility.

Autumn in the Harz Mountains: A Golden View Over Blankenburg
Autumn in the Harz Mountains
There is something about seeing a familiar place change completely with the seasons.
This view over Blankenburg caught my attention because autumn seemed to have reached almost every part of the landscape. Golden leaves filled the foreground, the surrounding hills had shifted into shades of yellow, orange, and brown, and between them sat the warm red rooftops of the town.
From up here, autumn in the Harz Mountains wasn’t just a detail anymore. It stretched across the entire view.
I love those few weeks when a landscape becomes noticeably warmer in color before everything changes again. It is beautiful precisely because you know it won’t last very long.
Looking Over Blankenburg in Autumn
Blankenburg sits on the northern edge of the Harz, surrounded by wooded hills and a landscape that becomes particularly colorful at this time of year.
What I like about this perspective is how many different layers you can see at once.
The autumn foliage is close enough to almost reach into the frame. Behind it are the rooftops and houses of Blankenburg, followed by the forested hills and finally the open landscape disappearing toward the horizon.
Your eye can wander.
There isn’t just one thing to look at, and that is part of what made me want to photograph it.
The town and nature don’t feel separate here. They seem woven together, with houses appearing between trees and the surrounding forest wrapping itself around Blankenburg.
The Colors of a German Autumn
When I think about autumn in the Harz Mountains, it is this combination of colors that comes to mind.
Golden yellow leaves. Rust and orange in the hills. Deep greens that haven’t disappeared yet. Terracotta rooftops catching the sunlight. And above all of it, a soft blue sky.
Autumn landscapes can easily become very dramatic, but this scene felt different to me. It was bright, open, and warm.
That is something I often look for in my photography. I’m drawn to color, but also to the relationship between different elements within a scene. Here, the red roofs echo the warmer tones of the landscape, while the blue sky gives all of those autumn colors room to breathe.
It feels seasonal without being dark or heavy.
Why I Photograph Autumn
Autumn is one of those seasons that makes me pay closer attention.
A landscape you may have walked through many times suddenly looks different. Trees that normally blend into one another become individual patches of yellow, orange, red, and green. Familiar views change almost from one day to the next.
Photography gives me a reason to stop when that happens.
Sometimes it is an entire landscape like this view over Blankenburg. At other times, it might be sunlight through a single tree, leaves reflected in water, or a small detail I would probably have walked past during another season.
That variety is also what I love about autumn photography.
It doesn’t always have to be the classic forest covered in orange leaves. Sometimes autumn is simply a change in light, a warmer palette, or a familiar place briefly looking completely different.
A View That Feels Like the Harz
The Harz Mountains have a strong connection to nature, forests, walking, and changing seasons, and I think this photograph captures a little of that character.
It isn’t a dramatic mountain panorama.
Instead, it is a quieter view of a town surrounded by the landscape it belongs to.
For someone who knows Blankenburg or has spent time exploring the Harz, there may be something familiar in that combination of wooded hills, traditional rooftops, and wide views across the region.
And even without that personal connection, I think there is something comforting about looking out over a landscape filled with autumn color.
Bringing the Feeling of Autumn Home
Enjoy the feeling behind this photo throughout my Autumn Collection.
The collection brings together different places and landscapes connected by the atmosphere of the season: golden light, changing leaves, warm earthy colors, reflections, quiet nature, and those brief moments when everything seems to glow a little differently.
Rather than creating a collection around one specific destination, I wanted the autumn prints to capture what I love about the season itself.
So if it is the golden colors, warmth, calm, or sense of being outdoors that draws you to this photograph, you can find that same feeling across my curated selection of autumn fine art prints.
A way to keep a little of the season around, long after the last leaves have fallen.
