Bauhaus Architecture in Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv is a city I can walk through again and again and still notice something different.

Part of that comes from its architecture. Across the city, buildings associated with the Bauhaus and International Style appear between trees, balconies, cafés, busy streets, and newer developments.

This photograph caught my attention because of its simplicity.

A rounded corner rises above the surrounding greenery, its pale façade glowing in the strong Tel Aviv light. The horizontal window and curved lines give the building its character, while the plants and bright flowers soften its geometry.

It is architecture, but it also feels very much alive.

Tel Aviv's White City

Tel Aviv is internationally known for its White City, an exceptional concentration of Modern Movement architecture developed particularly during the 1930s and following decades.

Although the term Bauhaus architecture is commonly used to describe these buildings, Tel Aviv's architectural identity is broader. Architects brought modernist ideas to the city and adapted them to its Mediterranean climate.

Balconies, shaded windows, simple façades, horizontal lines, and functional forms became part of the streetscape.

Today, these buildings are one of the features that make Tel Aviv architecture so recognizable.

Looking Beyond the Famous Buildings

When photographing Bauhaus architecture in Tel Aviv, I'm not only interested in documenting individual buildings.

I like the smaller details.

The curve of a balcony. The repetition of windows. A shadow cutting across a white wall. Greenery climbing in front of a geometric façade. The way the intense Mediterranean sun changes a building throughout the day.

In this photograph, it was the relationship between the architecture and the plants that made me stop.

The building itself is restrained and geometric, while everything growing around it feels almost unruly. The pink and red flowers introduce small bursts of color against the warm façade and pale blue sky.

That contrast made an ordinary architectural detail feel like a little discovery.

Photographing Tel Aviv on Foot

Walking is one of my favorite ways to photograph Tel Aviv because many of these moments are easy to miss when you're moving quickly.

The city isn't a perfectly preserved architectural museum. Its modernist buildings exist as part of everyday life. They age, weather, get renovated, disappear behind trees, and sit beside buildings from completely different periods.

For me, that's part of their appeal.

I'm interested not only in what a building was designed to be, but in what it has become as generations of people have lived around and within it.

And sometimes all it takes is the right light, an unexpected angle, and a few flowers growing into the frame to make me stop.
