The short-living surprise of Erica (Heather fields in the Netherlands)
The short-living surprise of Erica
Some things make their way as a surprise. And as fast as some of them appear, they are also quick to present accomplished facts. Many of these surprises are short-lived, and therefore, you can only enjoy them when they are really there.
And so it was with this scene which was suddenly there. Erica’s beautiful color play with its surroundings caused me to go home to bring my camera immediately because otherwise, I would have been too late.

Heather Fields in the Netherlands: A Landscape in Purple
Heather Fields in the Netherlands
When I think about landscapes in the Netherlands, endless fields, dunes and water usually come to mind first.
But then there are places like this.
I photographed these heather fields in the Netherlands when the landscape was covered in shades of purple and pink. A single birch tree stood in the middle of the open heath, surrounded by a darker line of forest in the background and one of those enormous Dutch skies above it.
It was the contrast that made me stop.
The delicate heather against the green forest. The solitary tree against the open sky. And the clouds moving overhead, constantly changing the light across the landscape.
When the Heather Blooms
The beautiful thing about photographing heather is how seasonal it is.
For much of the year, you could walk through the same landscape and see something completely different. But when the heather fields in the Netherlands begin to bloom, areas of heathland suddenly take on these incredible purple and pink tones.
And the colour isn't uniform.
Some patches are deep purple, others almost dusty pink, with grasses and warmer earthy tones appearing between them. As the sunlight moves in and out behind the clouds, those colours keep changing.
That's what interested me much more than trying to photograph a perfect field of purple.
I wanted the landscape to still feel wild.
A Quieter Side of the Netherlands
I photograph a lot of architecture and cities, so being somewhere like this changes the way I work.
There aren't many straight lines to organise the composition for me. Instead, I start noticing the natural shapes: the line where the Dutch heathland meets the forest, the irregular patches of heather and the way a single tree can suddenly become the centre of an entire landscape.
There is something wonderfully uncomplicated about it.
You walk, look, wait for the light to change and occasionally find a scene that makes you reach for the camera.
This was one of those scenes.
Photographing the Dutch Landscape
What I particularly like about this photograph is the sense of space.
The heather fills the foreground, but your eye eventually reaches the birch tree and then the forest behind it. Above everything is that huge blue sky filled with bright clouds.
It feels open without feeling empty.
For me, that's something characteristic of photographing nature in the Netherlands. The landscape doesn't necessarily need to be dramatic to hold your attention.
Sometimes it's simply a tree, a field of purple heather and good light.
And that's more than enough.
Bringing Nature Into Your Home
This photograph captures something I return to throughout my nature photography: landscapes that feel calm but still have enough colour, texture and detail to keep revealing something when you look at them.
