When people think about Amsterdam's canals, they often picture narrow canal houses, historic bridges, and boats moving through the city centre.

But Amsterdam's relationship with water extends far beyond those familiar scenes.

While exploring Amsterdam Oost, I came across this view along the Ringvaart. Instead of traditional canal houses, modern buildings rise beside reeds and trees, their reflections stretching across the still water.

It feels distinctly Amsterdam, but in a completely different way.

A Different Side of Amsterdam's Canals

What caught my attention here was the contrast.

On one side, the architecture is large, geometric, and unmistakably urban. On the other, dense greenery follows the water's edge. The Ringvaart runs quietly between them, almost dividing the scene into two different worlds.

Then there are the reflections.

The buildings, sky, trees, and warm evening light all repeat themselves on the surface of the water, softening the harder architectural lines.

These combinations of architecture and nature are something I often find myself looking for when photographing cities.

Photographing Amsterdam Oost

Amsterdam Oost has a very different atmosphere from the historic canal belt.

There is more space, contemporary architecture sits alongside older neighborhoods, and water and greenery remain an important part of the landscape.

For me, that's what makes exploring beyond Amsterdam's centre so interesting.

I can walk through streets I've visited many times and still find a completely different version of the city simply by changing direction.

This photograph was one of those discoveries.

The late light gave the buildings a warm glow while the Ringvaart remained almost perfectly calm. For a moment, the city felt unusually still.

Where Architecture Meets Nature

I often photograph architecture for its lines, repetition, and geometry, but I'm equally interested in what happens when those controlled forms meet something less predictable.

Water moves. Reeds grow unevenly. Trees interrupt sightlines. Reflections distort perfectly straight buildings.

In this image, those elements balance each other.

The architecture gives the scene structure, while the water and vegetation give it softness. Neither dominates completely.

It's a quieter image of Amsterdam — and one that reminds me why I enjoy exploring the parts of a city that don't necessarily appear on everyone's itinerary.
